New Coffee

•November 8, 2009 • Leave a Comment

As you may already know (or have tasted), Finca Nueva Armenia from Guatemala has been replaced with La Golondrina from Popayan, Colombia on our coffee menu.  This coffee was a huge favorite when we opened six months ago, and we’re happy to have it back on the roster.  This season, it is a bit more savory, but still delivers a pleasingly rich and well-balanced cup with caramel and chocolate notes.

You can read more about Counter Culture’s unique La Golondrina project, which partners directly with Popayan’s most talented and dedicated farmers, and then enjoy the coffee for yourself!

Coffee & Composting Event

•November 8, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Come join us this Friday and Saturday to talk and learn about composting…and drink coffee!

Bennett Compost will be hosting a Coffee & Composting Event at Ultimo Coffee where you can talk about reducing your environmental footprint through composting.  Bennett Compost is a small company based in the Newbold neighborhood that provides weekly compost pick-up in Philadelphia and works with urban gardens to put our waste to use.  Personally, we (Elizabeth and Aaron) are very grateful this little company exists, and feel much better these days peeling carrots and chopping onions!  You should be too….

For coming out to this event, Bennett Compost will buy you a cup of coffee; and what could be better — free coffee and composting!

Tim Bennett will be at Ultimo Coffee to chat next weekend:

  • Friday, November 13: 11am – 3pm
  • Saturday, November 14: 1 – 5pm

Also see the short note about the event in the current issue of GRID.  We look forward to seeing you!

Philadelphia City Paper on Esmeralda and Aaron Ultimo

•September 27, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Philadelphia City Paper’s “Meal Ticket” gives a shout out to Esmeralda Special at Ultimo Coffee (making it’s return to Ultimo Coffee this Thursday).  We are also surprised and excited to share with you this comment from Hacienda La Esmeralda Owner, Price Peterson from the link above:

“It might be of interest that Esmeralda Special coffee is produced by Philadelphians. Susan Peterson was born and raised in Mayfair and Price spent 12 years teaching at the U. of P., before they emigrated to Panama 36 years ago. Our thanks to Aaron Ultimo for bringing a piece of our Panama back to Philadelphia. We hope you enjoy it.”

Also, Aaron would like to thank the Philadelphia City Paper for the nice little bit of recognition he got in the Philadelphia City Paper’s 2009 Choice Award.  He is flattered and honored to be on a list of the brightest food and drink visionaries in the city.

Finca Mauritania is in

Starting tomorrow we will have a new coffee on our roster.  Ultimo Coffee is proud to announce that Finca Mauritania from Santa Ana, El Salvador will be available off of our drip bar.  This coffee comes to us from super star producer Aida Batlle who is recognized as an award-winning and dynamic producer pushing the bounds of what we can expect from coffee.  This coffee offers delicious notes of sweet red candy, caramel, citrus, and delicious sugary pastry.  Maybe it was our visit to the farm in 2007, but we can’t help but get terribly excited about this very special coffee and we hope you will too!

Coffee Updates

Idido Misty Valley has finally left us.  We still have a precious few shots of it left as a single origin espresso so don’t miss out on giving it one final taste goodbye.  On the drip bar we have replaced the Misty Valley with the illustrious Thunguri from Nyeri, Kenya.  This beauty is an exquisite coffee that shimmers on the palate with ripe  notes of raspberry, cherry, grapefruit, tropical fruit and that tell tale savory tomato note.  Our favorite Kenyan this year!  Don’t miss this one.  Its delicious.

Philadelphia Weekly recognizes Ultimo Coffee and other coffee news

•August 13, 2009 • Leave a Comment

We’re a bit late in posting this, but if you haven’t heard already Philadelphia Weekly just bestowed “best pour in Philadelphia” upon us and our illustrious Idido Misty Valley.  This coffee is truly a special one and as per our previous post it will not be around much longer.  In fact, next week is your FINAL chance to both drink and purchase beans of the Misty Valley.  It is very likely we will not see this coffee again for a while so don’t miss this opportunity to taste this extremely distinct and fruit filled cup we call Idido Misty Valley.  We will be featuring this coffee on our drip bar and as an single origin espresso all week long.

On a happy note we are proud to offer a new coffee to our roster.  “El Lechero” a Micro-Lot from Farmer Roberto Salazar’s Finca Pashapa in La Labor, Honduras will be available on our drip bar for a limited time starting this weekend.  Don’t miss this very special first time offered coffees from one of Counter Culture’s oldest farmer partners.

Also on the horizon are some very special coffees from Ms. Aida Batlle in El Salvador.  Be on the lookout for Finca Mauritania and its many manifestations as well as the limited availability Finca Kilimanjaro in the coming weeks.  We hope you’re as excited as we are!

Don’t forget that cuppings of these and many other delicious coffees happen this and every Friday at 5pm.  Drop us a line at aaronultimo at gmail dot com if you wanna check it out.
